I’m currently working on a commissioned piece for a photographer friend, capturing the historic Keystone Bridge in Elkader, Iowa. To me, painting is a form of storytelling—translating memories and emotions onto a two-dimensional surface. Before beginning the piece, she shared her reflections on growing up in Elkader, painting a vivid picture of the town through her eyes. I visited her home to better understand the palette that surrounds her daily life and to determine the ideal positioning and scale for the canvas. The composition unfolds against a soft pastel background, while modeling paste adds subtle texture, emphasizing the forms she wished to see brought forward, like moments gently rising from memory.
